1.     Historians usually rank the “Great Emancipator”, Abraham Lincoln, as the “greatest” of American presidents. Do you agree? Why or why not?

1. a Proper Thesis is needed to answer this question
2. You can not just say "Lincoln is the greatest. I agree"; you must provide evidence and historical accuracy to prove your thesis
3. Utilize at least 3 specific examples of Lincoln's policies ranging from the military to social issues and his legal stances.
4. Have a proper conclusion.
5. NO FIRST PERSON

2.     Do you think that President Lincoln was justified in his violations of ordinary civil liberties during the Civil War? Why or why not?

1. Again, this should be more than "I agree". You need to back up your thesis, whatever it may be.
2. Cite specific historical examples to prove your point. This is more than an opinion essay, you must provide a thorough analysis of what Lincoln did and explain why.
3. Thesis, Conclusion and proper grammar are all necessary.
4. NO First person!
5. All essays should be 5 paragraphs:

  •      First Paragraph: Introduction + Thesis
  •      Second Paragraph: 1rst Body Paragraph: Issue 1 or Evidence 1 from your Thesis
  •      Third Paragraph: 2nd Body Paragraph: Issue 2, or Evidence 2 from your Thesis
  •      Fourth Paragraph: 3rd Body Paragraph: Issue 3, or Evidence 3 from your Thesis
  •      Fifth Paragraph: Conclusion [DO NOT WRITE "IN CONCLUSION" or a derivative of  this]; restate [restate means to put into other words, don't just copy your thesis] the Thesis.

Utilize your Thesis as a checklist for the remainder of your paper or the main ideas of the body paragraphs. Make an outline- this will help you stay on task, become more focused and have a cohesive paper.

If need be refer back to the blog entry on DBQ writing which discusses Thesis.

Test will be 15 multiple choice, 1 short answer [worth 25 pts] and the Free Response [worth 30 points]

Good luck, & study!!

Additionally- this is a good online quiz to review the material from the Civil War, it is from the Pearson American History study site.
